as I pulled my car into my usual parking space at the Los Angeles Lakers Training Facility.
It was 6:30am and, as the team’s Strength and Conditioning Coach, I was arriving a few hours before the players to prepare for the day ahead.
It takes a village to prepare an NBA Player’s body for 82 games each year. Physical Therapists, Strength and Conditioning Coaches, Massage Therapists and Athletic Trainers all work together as a team to make sure every possible angle of their health is taken care of at the highest possible level.
And don’t forget about the front office actively investing millions of dollars each year to find even the slightest advantage. Cutting edge research and technology that hasn’t even been released to the public is available inside of an NBA team’s facility.
Once I got into the weight room, it was time to prepare each player’s unique warm-up activities for whatever issues they were dealing with.
Then I needed to lay out each of their custom weight training routines. Each program was PACKED with the most advanced techniques, specific to their body and needs, and meticulously designed to prevent injuries, keep them healthy and get them to peak at the right time.
It took me nearly a decade and thousands of my own dollars in research to learn how to create training programs like this, but once I did…WOW…the results were astounding.
Then it was time to get each athlete’s supplements ready. Vitamins, special powders and carefully crafted smoothie concoctions were prepared and placed in each of their lockers so they could get right to it upon arrival.
Around 8:00am, the players began to trickle in a few hours ahead of their 10:00am practice. The real athletes come early to prepare their body.
They start each day by heading to the training room to get treatment. Minor aches and pains are common in professional sports. It makes it all the more critical to take care of your body.
Their body is EVERYTHING to them. It’s their sole source of income and it’s how they provide for their families. Without their body, what would they become?
For the organization, millions (maybe even BILLIONS) of dollars are on the line. If a player can’t play, the cost is severe.
In fact, signs hanging in the training room reinforce the importance of staying healthy…
After treatment, they come next door to the weight room. Now it’s time to start putting in the work.
We kickstart their engines with carefully crafted warm-up activities and get right into strength training after. Each exercise is thoughtfully selected to get the right muscles in the right way. You wouldn’t believe how complex this selection actually is.
After their workout, they head out to the court for practice.
Two hours later, the end of practice doesn’t signify the end of the day though. Now it’s time to recover.
The post-practice time is filled with ice bath sessions, saunas, nutrition, supplements, more treatment and using special technology to dramatically increase recovery.
At that level, there is nothing more important than recovery. It’s the teams that are able to get back to 100% before their next game that see the highest performance increases.
On the team plane, the players would be hooked up to various pieces of technology that did things like, improve circulation, massage their legs and even force the brain waves into a recovery state. It was INSANE!
What was the result of all this work?
When something as simple as a few sniffles can completely derail a winning team’s momentum, you better believe that there is an army of scientists, coaches and therapists monitoring and working to prevent even the tiniest hiccup in the human body.
Must be nice, huh!
